MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ADVENTURE

We just got back home after spending the long Memorial Day Weekend at Bassett's Island, aboard our boat, Itlldo. This trip has become our unofficial boating season opener, and as in previous years, the time passed all too quickly. It was nice seeing all the boating friends we seldom see over the winter when we arrived at the marina on Friday evening. It was great catching up with everyone, and getting back in the boating groove. After sharing a large Antipasto from Riccardi's for dinner, the four of us - Cap & I, JR & Wacky - left for the 40 minute cruise just around sunset. Cap LOVES night cruising, and conditions we perfect. We arrived to find very few other boats anchored on the beach, but we knew that would change by morning. The flat calm conditions made for good sleeping, and we awoke to warm temperatures and bright sun shining into the portholes & hatches. Our weekend was unstructured and spontaneous, fun & relaxing at the same time. We slept in til 8:00 all three mornings (yippee!!) had long leisurely breakfasts on the deck, fruit & sandwhiches on the beach for lunch, and yummy dinners watching the sun set. In between meals we did a little bit of everything, including, playing board games, blowing bubbles and then trying to catch them again... feeding the geese fishing aimless dinghy rides, exploring the water for jellyfish & crabs, tandem kite flying lessons birdwatching 'smores, reading,
and well deserved naps.
While the weekend was relaxing and soul cleansing, we awoke this morning to an updated weather report of a small craft warning for Buzzard's Bay beginning at 1:00 pm. As the wind picked up steadily, and talk of really rough conditions on the marine radio, we decided to head back early.
It was clearly one of the bumpiest rides back to the marina, and it wasn't much fun. It took a bit longer than usual, about 50 minutes, 49 of which were 4, 5 & 6 foot seas pounding the boat. JR of course thought it was fun, Sabaka shook all the way, and I just sat and wondered why I bothered washing my hair before we left, considering I got another shower the entire ride home.
But, we all survived, and even tucked into North Cove on our way back, and had lunch just outside the beach.
I knnow EVERYONE had a great time, and we are already planning for our next adventure weekend. And, even though it was fun to be back on the water, after the pounding we took on the return trip, I am VERY glad I'll be sleeping in my own bed tonite!
