Day four of VBS and today's theme was Crazy Hats. I gotta tell you that I have gotten little work done around the house this week since I'm there until 12, then lunches, snacks etc. and it's 1:00 and while they nap, I start planning the next day's theme. I try and go outside with them when they get up from their naps and then it's dinner, clean-up, a little more outdoor time for them, and then it's time to start the nighttime rituals. Cleaning floors, dusting, ironing & uncluttering just haven't fit into our schedule - BUT - they are having a blast with it, so. Nonetheless, I figured we'd go easy on the hats. We came up with two good "simple" looking examples, and I gave one to Cap (the harder one, I thought) and I kept the other. He didn't mind because his was very "manly". An hour later, he was done, and I was up to my neck in red paint with no finished product ANYWHERE in sight. At one point both the dog & the carpet had red spots which required a half-hour of cleaning them both, then getting back to my "easy" hat. Let's just say things aren't always what they appear to be, and the hat I was making is proof. When the guys got up from their naps, we showed them to them and had them try them on. Drew's was too small, JR's too big. PLUS, they liked the one the other had. Since switching hats is easier than shrinking or stretching heads, we just switched them, and put them aside to dry til morning. As you can see, they were totally different hats. JRs was to be the Red pencil, but of course he was the Tool Time. And Drew, who we thought would be Tool Time, ended up the Red pencil. They weren't great, or perfect, but they loved 'em and this is all that mattered! Once at church the day flew. Partly because we were so busy again, and party because the kids are feeling the affects of the full moon! They were all so wired. None of them could sit in their seat for more than 10 seconds. It was not good. But, they had their attentive moments, and even managed to learn a few things! This time they had the kids vote for the winners. I thought this was an AWESOME idea. They all voted for their choice in the three age groups, and loved going around checking out all the crazy hats. I was very impressed with my little ones. All 9 voted for someone other than themselves, and were very serious about the task at hand. Ultimately, Drew got first prize again! I wondered if JR would say he wished he kept his original costume, but to my delight, his comment was that he was glad Drew won (he did vote for Drew). And if that wasn't enough, he said that he thought Tessa was good too, and that since she hasn't won yet, he hopes she will win tomorrow.Miss Tessa

I was very, very proud of his outlook! Of course now it's time to get to the final (thankfully) theme for tomorrow - dinosaurs! I'm not sure how they'll end up, but they will be creative, if nothing else. There is a reason they only hold VBS one week a year you know - the parents are too tired after the week is over and it takes the next 51 to recover!
