Holy Dinosaurs!
So this week is VBS at our church, so I feel like it's back to school time. Ugh. Not to VBS but to the schedule thing. Ya know me - I wasn't made to live a planned life. I like to just wing it. Anyway, got the boys up, and dressed and fed by 8:00, threw a load of laundry in, peeked into the fridge to get some inspiration for dinner, but then closed it again, uninspired. Fed the dog, had the boys go out and feed the fish, spent the usual 10 minutes looking for my keys, kissed Cap good-bye and we were on the road by 8:30. Yep, REALLY feels like a school schedule! I think the boys were still water logged from the weekend because they were very quiet and spacey, but that all changed when we got there.
The theme this year is Dino Detectives and the entire church was decked out. Dino bones, dino posters, giant inflatable dinos, dinos everywhere. Of course that woke them up, and within 5 minutes of registering, they were their usual selves. I had already told Julie I would help out, and quickly found myself in the swing of things, helping kids register, assigning teams, and keeping the kids from OD'ing on dino candy. 3 hours of skits, crafts, games, Bible verses later, we had day one under our belts. The boys absolutely had a blast, and I admit, it was alot of fun. I have the 6 & under group, so they are so enthused about everything, and very easy to please. Of course, it all gets more difficult from here because the rest of the week is theme days. Tomorrow it's "mismatched". Not too difficult. All I have to do is let the boys dress themselves, then switch one of their socks with the other and do the same with shoes. Done.
After that it's a bit more work. Wednesday they dress like Dino Detectives - you know - paleontologists. After an hour of web research I decided to go cheap and make them "khaki" vests out of paper bags, add some digging tools (my gardening tools I suppose), some magnifying glass, notebook, and a few other minor accessories.
Thursday is Crazy Hat day. Sounds simple, but the boys want the strangest ones. We're gonna make them, so I looked online for ideas. They loved most of them, but cannot decide which one to choose. I may have to have them narrow it down, then pick from a hat (no pun intended).
Lastly, Friday is Dinosaur Day. There are lots of cute dino costumes out there but I sure don't plan to spend $30 a piece on them. Plus, I'm basically too lazy to go out and shop around for bargain costumes, so I guess we'll be making hose too. Found some good ideas online, but definitely gonna have to enlist Cap's help.
Not sure how successful all our crafts will turn out, but, at least they're only 5. They don't know tacky yet....
Of course if any of you have any ideas for costumes or hats, just holler! As usual, I can use all the help I can get!

When I taught kindergarten we made dinosaur spikes for their backs. We took a long piece of card stock (like a sentence strip) and then I cut paper plates in half. I then stapled them onto the long strip so they made humps. Then we just attached them to their shirts.
Oh, I had them paint them... polka dots, stripes, whatever they came up with! They were really cute. If you can't picture what I'm saying I could dig one out and take a picture if you need me to. :)
What a fun week!
Oh cool, I think I know what you're describing - I'll holler if I can't figure it out! Thanks!
I was glad the week VBS was done - it just felt to constrained. I hated the need to be somewhere so early during the summer!
I think they should dress as Ross Gellar on Palentologist day. You know...from Friends. Come on that was funny!
Saw this online... It looks easy.
Things You’ll Need:
Dark green sweats
Panel of green felt
Plastic green visor or green baseball hat
Large plastic eyes
Sheet of white craft foam
Hot glue gun
To Do:
1. Cut two pieces of green felt into the shape and size you want for the dinosaur tail. Leave enough room at the top, about five to six inches, to be pinned and tucked into green sweats.
2.Sew the two pieces together, and stuff with rags for fullness.
3. Cut white foam into teeth-like shapes. You can make them jagged or pointy.
4.Affix the teeth to the brim of the visor using a hot glue gun, and space them about three inches apart.
5.Hot glue plastic eyes onto the visor or green baseball hat.
Thanks guys!
