Last summer we tried to plant a sunflower garden. I had found
instructions on the web, and was really excited about the project, as was JR It didn't do so well. Except for a few, the plants only grew about 4 feet tall, and they weren't very hardy. I had found tons of testimonials, so I was determined to get it right this year. We used a better location, better seeds, tilled the soil to a much deeper depth, and gave it more TLC. We even groomed it so there would be a little window on the west side. We used several different varieties, including Russian
Mammoth, Velvet Queen and It was
alot of fun planting, and watching them grow. JR enjoyed measuring how tall he was in relation to the plants, and now that the flowers are actually in bloom, we're all impressed! We're already thinking about next year's house - and plan to alternate sunflowers and morning glories, hoping for more defined "walls" with less gaps. Several online sites tell you how to do it, utilizing slightly different methods, I just need to decide on one. by next year we'll be planting a two room
house - one for each of my little boys! Come fall, we hope to harvest the seeds for next year - when I pray, we can grow a two-room house - one room for each of my boys! But, right now, JR will continue to enjoy his private escape.

Man, that is really really cool!
I love that. I would say I'd do it, but it just gets so dang hot here I don't think we'd keep it up.
Those are really beautiful though.
Wow, great! We tried last year as well but it didn't turn out too good. We didn't even try this year. What's the secret?
I think the main reason it did better was becase we prepared the soil better & watered it more often. We also gave it a few shots of miracle grow, and weeded it more often in the beginning. WHen the sprouts first came up we noticed big gaps and replanted. That's about it...really not a lot of work!
